The Similarities Between Architectural Descriptions and Romance Novels
As in a romance novel, a reader has expectations for architectural descriptions. The two genres are more similar than you might think. I have a lot to say about how architects describe their work, their firms, and their people. Avoiding the temptation to read or sound like every other firm is difficult. Why? Architects generally do not want to give the impression that they are a risk to a prospective client. This is especially true when prospective clients explicitly ask us to describe just how dependable, low-risk and methodical we are. This is somewhat ironic given the multitude of risks on any given project, including financial investment, market price fluctuations, politics, and circumstances unrelated to our competencies as architects.
